Different
Dimensions

So because humans saw that there were too many shapes for them to imagine,

they thought that they should begin things as simply as they could.

So they started with a dot,

but not a dot, a point,

a place that doesn't have a size.

Then they imagined another one

in a place some distance away,

and the shortest distance between them they called a line.

And if any two lines are long enough, at some point they will cross.

Unless they don't,

in which case that special kind of pairs of lines are called parallel.

And parallel lines are important,

especially for patterns.

And they made 2D shapes by joining lines together in different ways

to form polygons,

and some of them were special because they had sides with parallel lines.

So then they joined those 2D shapes together

to make shapes in 3D,

they imagined structures and solids,

And they discovered how incredibly rare

were the number of polyhedrons that could be made from regular polygons,

the polyhedrons they call the Platonic solids.

But what is less rare is often more useful,

so they could use rectangles to make cuboids,

or mix rectangles with triangles to make prisms and pyramids.

Or they could add a curve to the mixture,

joining equal circles together to form a cylinder,

with curved sides made of parallel lines,

or perhaps they might join up a point and a circle

to make a cone.

And of course, you don't have to stop at three dimensions.

You can imagine four or five or more.

It's just that humans can't see them with their 3D eyes.

But a little creature living in flatland,

a place that only has two dimensions

can't see things in 3D

but can imagine them by thinking of how a 3D shape looks in 2D

as it passes through our little flat creature's 2D world

and its 2D shape moves and changes over time.

In the same way,

people who live in a world of three dimensions can't see in 4D

but can imagine a 4D shape

as it looks moving through their 3D world.

Humans can only see a tiny fraction of God's creation,

but they were made to be able to imagine so much more.

And in God, the Creator, all the dimensions become One.
